Welcome to part 2 of my coverage of Action Comics Volume 2: Welcome to the Planet. Today I am covering issues #965 and #966. If you need to read part 1 feel free to click here. In this post we are going to be catching up with the ever intrepid Lois Lane.
Lois Lane, Back at the Planet, Part 1: This issue starts with the reader getting Lois Lane's POV as she walks into the Daily Planet. She is narrating how nervous she is. She is feeling like a fraud as she reaches the bullpen, sure that everyone will figure her out quickly. She recognizes Jimmy Olsen but only learns another co-workers name (Jackee) after Jimmy says it. Everyone seems to except she is their Lois Lane (Just with shorter hair).
Jimmy warns Lois that Perry is not happy with her disappearing. Lois shrugs that off, but it does make her worry about the Lois who is actually supposed to be there. She makes it to Perry's office and is worried about him more than anyone else seeing through her act. She opens the door and is shocked by someone else already being there.
We cut to a dream that Lois had the previous night of the long haired and younger Lois that is from this Earth. In the dream young Lois is trying to reach out, but older Lois wakes up. She wakes up in the woods where the tunnel from her house ends. Before she can worry too much about her dream or her location, Superman swoops in and picks her up.
The subject changes to the disappearance of the Genetictron building. Superman could not look more into it because Lex was there playing Superman. Neither Lois or Superman are happy about this Super-Lex or the weird Clark Kent running around. Superman is feeling down about Super-Lex and Clark Kent for stealing what should be his life. Now that he is out as Superman though, he has been pretty busy and is missing when they were in California and had a cool beard (okay, that is just me).
The subject gets back to Lois and what she needs. She is wanting to get back to writing as herself. Clark points out that the other Lois is still at her desk. She tells him about her dreams and reminds us, the reader, about a letter she got from Lois. (How did she know about other Lois and find their address to send a letter?) Superman reminds us that other Lois was there when other Superman died and she is another Lois Lane so is it surprising she found her?
Before they can discuss it more Jon comes running out asking for ice cream. Jon is not feeling school and I get it. New school is no fun and ice cream is. Lois pulls the military brat card and says that making new friends is tough but can be fun too, but she does cave to the demand for ice cream (am I now going to take a break to also eat ice cream? Yes...yes I am).
Clark and Lois continue to talk for a while. Mostly it amounts to she needs more in her life than being Jon's mom. (Note: she loves him, but we are talking about Lois Lane! She needs more guys!) Back to that letter from other Lois, she was told to write a book about her Superman, but if something happens to her then Lois needs to finish it. Then there is a strange series of numbers and letters. She had tried to get ahold of young Lois but she was missing.
Back at Perry's office, we find out the mystery guest is Lex Luthor. Perry wants to know where the Superman book is. She claims writer's block. Perry is skeptical, but Lex understands, he further asks her to figure out who this new Superman is and if she wants to write some nice stuff about him too, that would be cool. Then Lex just leaves.
Perry checks that she is still good with writing the book on Superman and she tells him she is and thanks. She leaves and finally makes it to the other Lois Lane's office. Before she can even sit down, Clark walks in. (I am not a fan of this Clark. Just putting that out there.) He basically accosts her, demanding to know what she has been doing and telling her he even called her father. Lois is unimpressed. Clarks gets more and more agitated and then spills coffee all over the computer in Lois's office. Lois decides it is time for her to bounce.
The next stop Lois makes is the apartment of the other Lois. She is still shaken from her interaction with fake Clark. Before she can really get to exploring, she is interrupted by Superwoman. Superwoman knows that she is not her Lois and she is not happy to see her trying to take over Lois's life.
Lois Lane, Back at the Planet, Part 2: Lois Lane is narrating, she should be worried about herself, but instead she is thinking about Clark and Jon. We see the source of her thoughts. Her two leading men are star-gazing. Clark is trying to help Jon use his super sight. Jon can see a space station but wonders why he can't see into it. Clark was a little older than Jon when he first got X-ray vision, so Jon might get that power later. Jon can't really fly yet, but he is superfast, even Clark is surprised. They get home only to realize that Lois isn't there. Jon is worried but Clark tells him she might be gone more because she is going back to work. It is a really nice father and son chat.
Back in Metropolis, Superwoman wants to know who the heck this Lois look-alike is. Superwoman is pretty smart and quickly figures out that this is the reason the new Superman is so worried about his private life. I think because Superwoman is in her super mode, Lois cannot tell who she is. Superwoman wants to talk to Clark. Lois plays dumb, while trying to secretly call her house. Jon answers and since he is also a smart kid, he quickly figures out that his mom is in trouble. Clark heads towards Metropolis, telling Jon to stay.
Superwoman 100% has it figured out, she deduces they are from a parallel universe. Superman arrives telling her to back off. She simply greats Superman, then powers down, revealing herself to be Lana Lang. It was super clear, but Clark and Lois are very surprised. (Note: The first few issues of the Superwoman comic came out before this issue and I will cover that volume later.) Clark is a little hurt, but when he and Lana spoke after the other Superman died, she didn't know she had powers.
We see a short flashback of Lana and Lois getting hit by blasts after Superman died. They developed powers shortly after. Lois wants to know where the other Lois is (oof, not confusing). Lana is hesitant to say, but Lois has her password so she logs into her computer. There is a message on Lois's computer for Lois (I know I should call them something to differentiate, but nothing really makes sense. So I will just try to be clear.) The message is a goodbye. One of those if you are watching this, I am gone kind of messages.
Lana is clearly upset as younger Lois describes feeling sick and being pulled apart. She asks Lois to finish her book and be there for her father and all the people at the Daily Planet. Lana finally tells them that her Lois is gone, that she vaporized right in front of Lana (the same way her Clark did). Lana is terrified that the same thing will happen to her. She isn't sick right now, but her powers are not the same as Superman and none of them know what that means for Lana.
As for Lois, she wants to honor the other Lois' request. (She does acknowledge that is weird and a little creepy.) Lana wants to know what is up with the other Clark, she wonders too if he is her Clark brought back to life. Superman is pretty sure it isn't. They still have a lot to talk about.
Back at home on their farm Jon is happy his parents are back home. He is pretty cute when he encourages his mom and tells her how he is cool with her being gone more. Jon literally zips off to bed. Lois and Clark share a quiet moment on the porch.
The next day, Lois is back in Metropolis, on her way into the Daily Planet. This time she is confident and ready to face everything, even Lex Luthor. Lois confronts Lex, telling him that she will do an interview with him, but she won't pull any punches. He is happy to hear it. Perry is happy to have Lois back and she is happy to be back, not just for the other Lois, but for herself too.
Just outside the city, beard guy is up to something. He seems to summon someone he calls Zade. Zade wants to know what took so long. Beard guy was studying Superman and now it is time for them to kill him. (They seem to think he is a criminal and murderer.)
Thoughts: More and more develops in the saga of this new Superman and the ever amazing Lois Lane. I liked this volume and I appreciate that they are not rushing to fix the "problem" that was the New 52 Superman. I like that they aren't making him or Lois villains, just different individuals who took different paths. Do I think Lois stepping in and filling the shoes of a dead woman is a little weird? Yes. Do I think Clark would do the same if there wasn't a mystery Clark running around? Also, yes. Guess we will all just have to wait and see.
My favorite line in this volume goes to Jon Kent. What can I say, this kid gets me.
Clay Mann was the cover artist for all of the main covers in this volume and Gary Frank did all of the variant B covers. If you want to check out their Twitter and see more of their cool art, click on their names. It was a tough choice but my favorite cover below just made me smile. I like a happy Superman and Superwoman.
