Comic Recap/Thoughts: Wonder Woman Vol. 1: The Lies, Part 2

Happy Friday! Hope you are all ready for the wild ride that is Wonder Woman. Today I am continuing my recap of Wonder Woman Vol. 1: The Lies, specifically issues #3, 5, and 7 (yep, not confusing at all). If you still need to read part 1 feel free to click the link (here). Better to just jump in head first and see if Barbara can help Diana figure out who or what she is.

The Lies, Part Two: In the Urzari Jungle, Cheetah keeps asking Diana to repeat what she needs. Diana keeps asking Barbara Ann for help. Cheetah doesn't like being called Barbara Ann, because she is dead and that is Diana's fault. Diana reminds Barbara that she was not to blame and she tried to stop her. Diana asks one more time for help finding Themyscira. The two of them discuss the past and it is clear that while Cheetah is hurting she seems to both love and hate Diana and Diana wants to help Barbara as much as she wants her help.

Elsewhere, Steve and his crew are doing their best to help the village that Cadulo attacked. They decide as a team that they will be bringing all the missing daughters home. They do not clear it with Etta, but Steve knows she would support the call. They start driving until they come across what is likely a mystic and unnatural landscape. What else can they do but venture into the unknown.

Wonder Woman and Cheetah are racing through the jungle. Wonder Woman doesn't understand why they are fleeing from Cheetah's worshippers. Turns out they are not her worshippers but the worshippers of her sire/complicated husband (the one who turned her into Cheetah). The beasts do catch up and Cheetah gets speared while Wonder Woman fights the many that are attacking her. Cheetah recovered and gets super extra murdery. Wonder Woman has to stop her and calm her down (it is a very intimate moment). Cheetah finally agrees to help Diana if she promises to help her kill Urzkartaga (guessing on the spelling).

Steve and his team have been captured by Cadulo who seems to work for Urzkartaga. (Not looking great for him and his team).

The Lies, Part Three: Etta is visiting someone (I think maybe her director). Etta tells her they lost contact with Steve's team over four hours ago. The director, named Sasha, looks like a badass and assumes Etta wants to mount a rescue mission for Steve and his team. However, Etta just tells Sasha about how Wonder Woman was spotted close to where his team disappeared. Etta knows that Steve and Diana are connected, so if they can get a message to her, she will get him out.

In some kind of jungle prison, Cadulo (who refers to himself in the third person) is being mean to Steve. Cadulo takes Steve's picture of Wonder Woman and asks him who she is to him. Long story short, it is complicated. Also, Urzkartaga needs sacrifices so he can get more powerful and take more brides and generally continue to be a bad guy. Cadulo decides that Steve will be the perfect vessel for Urzkartaga.

Cheetah and Wonder Woman are making their way through the jungle. Cheetah admits her hunger keeps getting worse and worse as she forgets who she used to be. Diana tells her how she remembers how kind Barbara was when they first met. Cheetah asks what Diana means when she says she can't find her way home. Diana explains when she first left she knew she could never go back, but Cheetah points out that Diana has in fact returned many times. Now Diana cannot find it and doesn't know why or what has changed.

We see a flashback of a few of Diana's memories that she is questioning. Cheetah suggests that her gods are messing with Diana, just like Urzkartaga is messing with her. The beast men have stopped pursuing them because they have reached the temple of Urzkartaga.

Back at director Sasha's house, she and Etta agree to give the team and Wonder Woman 12 more hours before they go in. As soon as Etta is gone a small sphere shows up and Sasha's eyes go white. Sasha seems to be in league with Urzkartaga or it might be more complicated, but it is clear they want Wonder Woman for some reason.

Cadulo is being real creepy while talking about the "male presence." Kind of your standard evil megalomaniac monologue. Steve points out how gross all his and Urzkartaga ideas are and how that is totally some toxic masculinity bullshit. In their cell, Steve's team notes that half the women are missing and they don't really have a plan to escape. One guy (the old one who has been around a while, I did not pay attention to their names) just says to wait for it. He is right of course because Wonder Woman runs in with Cheetah. They defeat all the guards and Wonder Woman is confused about why all of these guys (she knows Steve's team) are there. Also, where is Steve?

The Lies, Part Four: Wonder Woman frees all the women and Steve's team. They catch her up on all the kidnapped girls, how some are still missing and how Cadulo is going to use Steve's body to give Urzkartaga a body. Wonder Woman sends the team off with the girls, because her and Cheetah will be taking care of Cadulo and Urzkartaga. They are a little worried about Cheetah having Wonder Woman's back but Cheetah puts them in their place.

Cheetah gives a short recap of why Urzkartaga needs the women and how she became cursed. Diana feels like maybe she is not the only one who has been deceived. (The art for this is dope and I will share it below.) Below them, Cadulo has started the ritual and it is about as creepy as these kinds of rituals get, but before things get too crazy, Wonder Woman and Cheetah intervene, totally destroying Urzkartaga.

Diana and Steve have a cute exchange and hug it out. Cadulo is upset. Cheetah takes him down pretty easily, but Diana stops her from killing him. Steve goes to help the other set of girls, but turns out Urzkartaga isn't dead and he attacks Diana. The two of them fight, Urzkartaga knows of Wonder Woman and gives her credit for Barbara Ann's interest in gods and somehow it is also her fault she is Cheetah.

Urzkartaga further tries to get Cheetah to help him, but Wonder Woman points out that he is lying to her again. Wonder Woman also points out that Urzkartaga seems to be afraid of the girls. She tosses her lasso to Cheetah and tells her that the women in Cheetah's story were not worshiping Urzkartaga, they were his wardens. Urzkartaga gets real nervous real quick as the women circle him with the lasso. It does the trick and this time they kill him for good. (Note: Urzkartage turns into a flower, seems like this might matter later.)

Barbara Ann is now back to her human self. She is very upset, but Diana is there for her.

Thoughts: This is some really heavy Wonder Woman stuff. I like the relationship between Diana and Barbara Ann. I am always in favor of a team up and villain redemption story. Also, I might have put in a few extra screenshots because the art in this volume continues to be amazing and trust me it was hard to narrow it down. Picking a favorite cover is going to be super hard. I have a couple of mixed feelings regarding the cosmic connection that Steven and Diana supposedly have, but I get why they did it. They have to get her away from that whole Superman debacle and I guess I am okay with Steve being a bit of a damsel in distress.

Next week I will wrap up this volume and give you my favorite line and make the super hard choice of my favorite cover. Looking forward to it? I know I am.
